Easy Homemade Horse Treat Recipe: Honey Apple Oat Edition

Hi friends!

Today, we’re whipping up some homemade horse treats—Honey Apple Oat to be precise! This 4-ingredient horse treat recipe is so simple, even your pony could make them (if only they had thumbs). Sure, you could grab a bag of store-bought treats, but where’s the fun in that? Baking them yourself means you know exactly what’s in each treat—no weird, unpronounceable stuff! Not to sound like one of those “crunchy horse moms,” but have you seen the ingredient list on some of those bags?

With cooler weather rolling in, I always get the urge to bake something cozy. This time, though, my horses get to enjoy the goodies instead of my husband. Poor guy. I even offered him one (hey, they’re human-grade, okay?), but he wrinkled his nose and walked out of the kitchen. His loss, really.

Now, let’s dive into this delicious homemade horse treat recipe!

Measure your ingredients. I start with measuring out all my ingredients, but this is a personal preference. It helps me to stay organized in the process, plus there's something satisfying about seeing everything laid out in front of me.

Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you don’t have parchment, greasing the sheet with coconut oil works just as well.

Mix the dry ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the oats and flour.

Add the wet ingredients. Pour in the applesauce and honey (or molasses) in with the oat/flour mixture, and stir until everything is well incorporated.

Shape the treats. Using a tablespoon or a mini ice-cream scoop, portion out the dough, roll into small balls, and place on your prepared baking sheet. Make sure to leave about ½ inch between them.

Bake for 15 minutes. If the treats aren’t firm or slightly golden on the bottom, leave them in for a few more minutes, checking periodically.

Cool the treats. Once baked, let the treats sit on the baking sheet for 5 minutes to cool and harden a bit before transferring them to a container.

The final and most important step, let your ponies enjoy! These are also GREAT for hiding pills inside, as they're just soft enough to break apart. My boys LOVE these!

There you have it—an easy homemade horse treat recipe that your horse will love! These treats are not only fun to make, but they’re also wholesome and free from unnecessary additives. Whether you’re rewarding good behavior or just showing some love, this horse treat recipe is a perfect choice.

Happy baking, and enjoy treating your four-legged friends!
